Germany 2021- Jendrik Sigwart with ‘I Don't Feel Hate’

After several leaks Germany have unveiled their entry for Rotterdam and, well, oh dear…

It’s been a while since we had a real hot mess at Eurovision, most of the bad attempts at recent contests are just middle of the road, bland entries but this is a real misfire from Germany.

If ‘I Don't Feel Hate’ was a deliberate attempt to troll the contest I would give Germany some credit. Sending a guy with a dreadful song who is blissfully unaware about the fan reaction- Genius.

The problem is that I don't think that's what Germany is doing here. They think the answer to their struggles on the televote is sending someone who fits in well on YouTube and TikTok. They think something quirky and happy is what's needed this year. Somehow, they forgot that despite everything else that goes into doing well at Eurovision, it still is a song contest, and it's the song which is coming up short. So short that I don't see any jury giving this a point.

The only positive I can even try to find is the “Europe needs something happy this year” angle, but on the other hand, this is a really bad year to try this. There's already many acts in that field.

Even though Jendrik is musically different to the likes of The Roop or Daði Freyr, the market for any fun, meme-able, happy, novelty, or whatever you want to call them votes is too narrow for a below par entry to compete in. And that's before we include any other act that can also fall under that category.

And of course, I’m just wasting everyone’s time here with all this analysis of the field because the song is just so bad and far more annoying than endearing.

As for Jendrik, as this has been a harsh review: I have no hate for him. I don't really go in for his kind of Schtick in general but whatever.

I also don't blame him for what he's trying to do or for tossing his hat into the ring to represent Germany. All the fault is with the delegation again. This is the sort of entry that can take years to recover from in terms of attracting talent and Germany will probably return to a national selection next year.

In 2017 Spain's car crash saved Germany's bland entry from last place. It looks like the favour might be returned this year and Germany may do well to avoid setting an embarrassing record under the new scoring system.

SORRY!
