Germany 2024: Isaak with ‘Always On The Run’

Last night proved an interesting one with the big market favourite ending nowhere near and the 30-1 Isaak winning the German ticket to Malmo:

Despite this being the televote winner, jury winner, my own personal favourite and having well documented reservations over Ryk I do think this still has to go down as “not the best choice to score points”.

‘Always on the Run’ is a catchy song but one destined to struggle in a field of 26 without any diaspora or neighbour support. This is far superior to ‘Embers’ in both studio and performance but there are similarities to James Newman's ill fated Eurovision journey. This won't be blanked by the juries but the televote could be painful.

There's not a great amount of room for a staging concept and this is one to focus on the basics of a good backdrop, camera angles, lighting and pyro. A more composed Isaak would also be a benefit. His look is fitting but walks a fine line between casual and earnest and just scruffy.

Overall, the juries could be having this anywhere from 13th-23rd depending on presentation but the televote looks destined to be single figures regardless of performance or even running order. Last place is possible, particularly with the current 100% televote semis and historic big 5 record, but I’d still be assuming Spain finish lower overall.
