Odds Review: Week Ending 05/03

Our first and most anticipated entry of the past week saw the Netherlands release their entry ‘Burning Daylight’. I’d probably say 200+ is harsh for this and places it in worse company than it deserves to be but it’s hard to see a realistic path to victory. A top 10 would be a good result.

Cyprus also debuted their full entry which adds to the decidedly “meh” semi final 2 in which 500-1 songs on the main outright have a semi plausible case for gold on the Thursday night.

Germany would be default favs for last, once again, in my book with the selection of ‘Blood and Glitter’. Saturday saw our strongest act of the week going from the current odds join the party with the 180-1 Moldova making the correct choice of Pasha Parfeny. Again, top 10 is the goal here whilst Serbia might be a couple of places Back with Black. Making the correct choice and shortening by half to still 400+ tells you all you need to know about Iceland’s national final standard this year. ‘Power’ is still to be reviewed properly but it’s not a winner.

Elsewhere Israel may or may not have released one of the most disappointing snippets of all time depending on if what is heard is the actual entry. The increased uncertainty here makes the drift reasonable. Switzerland had a more promising couple of seconds officially released before a further 13 seconds put the brakes on any hype. Yes, we’re in that twitchy stage of the season as these reactions illustrate but with Sweden setting a high bar in the eyes of the market it’s not taking much for countries to be wrote off. We see both in the coming days anyway.

Austria take the gold in our spontaneous feature “mis-click of the week” being matched in single figures before returning from whence it came. Next week unleashes their entry on to the world as Melfest and Festival da Cancao in Portugal come to a close.

Our caucasus trio of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia are engaged in a standoff as to who releases their entry last whilst we also have a delay in Greece due to national tragedy and/or legal proceedings- welcome to the entertainment industry Victor!- I’d settle for participating at this stage if I were you.

Finally, The UK is still keeping us waiting as the list of rumoured female soloists closes in on double figures. The diverse list of rumoured songs makes 4th favourite a very flattering position I’ll say but let’s see, the BBC and TAP might be having fun with all this having caught the Eurovision bug but surely by this time next week we’ll know if there’s a realistic shot at the win.
